SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service
DESCRIPTION:The word maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum (commandment) and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” to his disciples at the Last Supper (John 13:34). The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last Supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: the washing of the disciples’ feet and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion. The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come.

SUMMARY:Mystery Play: The Man who Defied God
DESCRIPTION:The Man Who Defied God is the third in a series of original mystery plays written by Paul Dedell\, and tells the complex story of the prophet Jonah.\nAlthough the story of Jonah is set in the ancient Middle East during a time of conflict between the Jews and the Assyrians\, the political and social conflict that is at the heart of the story is startlingly contemporary.  Jonah\, an ordinary Jew\, was commanded by God to bring a message of mercy and forgiveness to the enemy Assyrians in order to prevent them from ultimate destruction.  Jonah runs away because he cannot bring himself to extend compassion to a people he hates and who hate him.  The Man Who Defied God follows Jonah on his journey through stormy seas\, the belly of the whale\, the fiery heat of the desert; witnesses his encounter with giant plants and devouring worms; and witnesses his struggle as he wrestles with God’s mandate to show love for those unlike him. \nPaul dove into the story of Jonah with relish. Intrigued by the story of a man of faith who attempted to hide from God\, he began writing the piece last fall\, and discovered a lot about the story — and maybe himself — in the process. \nHe discovered that initially he didn’t like Jonah. “I thought of him as self centered\, with little compassion for others.  It was difficult to find a way in to his character as a result. After wrestling with the story for a while\, I realized that I was regarding Jonah through the same narrow lens that he saw through — a perspective where people are either good or bad\, virtuous or evil.” \nAs Paul worked forward\, he began to understand – even identify —with Jonah. “Jonah had plenty of physical courage\, and plenty of commitment\, but his world view was almost unavoidably limited by what he knew. Jonah saw himself as a ‘right-thinking’\, right-acting man.  Challenged to expand his vision\, he gave in to fear.” \nThis internal conflict provided the motivation for his composition. “Fear limits our ability to live a full life\, to be fully ourselves\, whether it is fear of failure\, fear of rejection\, or fear of actual physical destruction. All of us are influenced by how we’re brought up\, by what we perceive as ‘right’ — and it sometimes takes a strange and hard journey to start releasing those fears.” \nThe message of the story is as timely today as it was thousands of years ago. We have a lot to learn from Jonah! \nMusic and Libretto by Paul Dedell\nMusical Direction by Susan Dedell\nwith Moby Pearson\, violin\n7 pm  Saturday\, March 19\n3 pm  Sunday\, March 20

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday\, 8 & !0:15 am
DESCRIPTION:This special liturgy begins with a procession of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion. The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!”

A Jesuit priest famous for his gang intervention programs in Los Angeles\, Fr. Greg Boyle makes winsome connections between service and delight\, and compassion and awe. He heads Homeboy Industries\, which employs former gang members in a constellation of businesses. This is not work of helping\, he says\, but of finding kinship. The point of Christian service\, as he lives it\, is about “our common calling to delight in one another.”\n\n

Joanna Macy writes\, The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world\, we’ve actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are beginning to wake up\, as from a millennia long sleep\, to a whole new relationship to our world\, to ourselves\, and to each other. Author\, Buddhist scholar\, and environmental activist\, Johanna Macy is an acclaimed teacher. It is her goal to help us identify our curiosity\, energy\, and strength that together we may live out the active hope our world needs now.

Canon Edward Rodman\, presented by Craig Hammond.   Ed has been a rare force\, sometimes a hurricane\, who has made a huge impact on both my life and the work of the Episcopal Church over the past 50 years. We were classmates at the Episcopal Theological School (now EDS) in the mid sixties. We shared interests\, our studies\, collaborated on our senior research paper\, split off from one another over black power in the civil rights movement\, and have come back together to share a lifetime of friendship. We’ve come together in grief and in celebration. He’s been a visionary\, a pastor\, a teacher and mentor\, and a brother. It is an honor to speak of him during these forty days we share with our Lord In prayer\, contemplation and preparation.

SUMMARY:St. Michael's Women's Retreat
DESCRIPTION: Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life \nSt. Michael’s Women’s Retreat\, February 5-7 \nHallelujah Farm\, Chesterfield\, NH \nWomen of St. Michael’s!   You are invited to come away for a time of story-telling\, prayer\, play\, conversation\, nurture and rest in a beautiful\, sacred setting.   This is the first time in recent history that St. Michael’s has offered a women’s retreat. The idea arose out of a desire of many of us to deepen our relationships with the women at St. Michael’s in a prayerful and spacious setting where we weren’t “doing” but just “being” together.   The setting of the retreat is the Lower Farm\, a beautifully restored farmhouse from the 1700s.   You can check out the Lower Farm at http://www.hallelujahfarm.com/new-the-lower-farm.html \nWe have planned the retreat around the theme of “Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life.”   To this end\, we will explore questions about ways of approaching our daily life and work with an awareness of God’s presence in the midst of all we do.   Between more focused times of learning\, there will be time for rest\, conversation\, hiking\, eating and basking in the warmth of the fireplace. \nIf you are interested in attending this retreat\, please fill out the registration form found on St. Michael’s website\, www.stmichaelsvermont.org \, under “news”  or contact Jeanie Crosby and she will send you a form. The retreat will begin on Friday evening\, February 5 and end after lunch on Sunday\, February 7.   Space is limited\, so please sign up as soon as possible.   If you have questions about the retreat\, please feel free to ask one of us\, or email Mary Lindquist at mary@stmichaelsvermont.org \nThe suggested donation to help us cover the costs of room and board is $200.  Sliding scale for overnight donation is $100-$200.     \n There is also the option to come to the retreat just for Saturday during the day.   The suggested donation for Saturday Day Retreat is $35 (scholarships to cover the day donation are available).   \nWe are very excited about this opportunity for us to come together for this special time. \n– The 2015 Women’s Retreat Planning Team (Mary Lindquist\, Leigh Marthe\, Liz Vick\, Karen Guthrie and Jean Smith) \n  \n

Due to the success of the program\, the choir school is expanding! Beginning on Thursday\, February 4\, the Choir School will offer a new class specially designed for incoming singers ages 6\,7or 8. The program runs for a half hour from 3:45-4:15\, although children may arrive as early as 3:30 for a healthy snack. \nIn this half hour\, students will learn basic concepts of rhythm\, pitch and “choircraft” in addition to singing some wonderful music. No prior musical experience is needed\, just the love of singing and the desire to learn more. Although the program is funded and hosted by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, no church affiliation is necessary. In addition to the thrill of singing with others\, choral singing is a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. The Choir School programs are free of charge. Talk to director Susan Dedell if you have any questions or need more information. Susan can be contacted at sdedell@sover.net\, by phone at 802-348-7735\, or leave a message at the church office\, 802 254-6048.

SUMMARY:The Longest Night Service
DESCRIPTION:The holiday season can magnify what is going on in our lives\, including pain and loss. “Peace on earth\,” or even peace in our hearts\, may seem an impossible dream. Sadness and memories may seem over- whelming at a time when joy and celebration are expected. The Longest Night is a service of hope for all who carry sorrow of any kind. Join us in this inclusive service\, during which we honor the burdens we bear and claim the promise of light that follows even the darkest night. We hope that the music\, readings\, candles\, and chants may help us to find the comfort we need and strengthen the connection we share. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Christmas Pageant Practice Begins

We’ve been doing our own Vermont Nativity for several years now and will continue to do so\, modifying to fit the company and adding\, of course\, any new elements that pageanteers invent. Recent pageants\, for instance\, have been blessed with flocks of free-range angels and sheep. A couple live rabbits showed up for auditions\, too; not wanting to turn any one away\, we found roles for them. \n\n\n\n\nHere are the roles we need to fill: innkeeper’s assistant\, innkeeper\, Mary\,\nJoseph\, Angel Gabriel\, angels\, shepherds\, wise wo/men\, starbearer and readers (all 8 to 19-year-olds are welcome as readers!) Word is that we have a Jesus.\nWe’ll rehearse: Sunday mornings 9:00-10:00 a.m. (during Sunday school) starting… \n\n  November 29: Talk briefly about the story and hear what role each child would like to play.\n  December 6: Run-through the script with pageanteers in the roles they’ve chosen; determine what we want to change and start “blocking.”\n  December 13: Annie will be out of town; we’ll still rehearse\, but the plan is tba.\n  December 20: Finish all blocking; run through with all lines assigned\, with music andwith props.\n  December 23: Dress rehearsal at 4 PM.\n  December 24: All should arrive at 3:15; The pageant is at 4:00 p.m.We invite youth from outside the Parish to join in\, too. If you have friends from school or the neighborhood who’d like to be part of the pageantry\, please encourage them to come to do so. SUMMARY:Advent Seasonal Offering Begin
DESCRIPTION:OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTION IN ADVENT: While Advent is meant to a time for quiet reflection and anticipation\, we all know that it is often the busiest\, most stressful time of the year. At St. Michael’s this year\, we are offering three brief (30 minute) weekly opportunities to come together in prayer in the inviting warmth of the candlelit Chapel. These gatherings are not meant to be “one more thing to do” but a way to insert some prayerful spaciousness into the season.\n\n Mondays\, 5:30 pm\, “Praying the Rosary” – This is an opportunity for us to learn the practice of praying the rosary together. We will learn the Anglican Rosary and will have extra rosaries available for those who do not have one of their own. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Tuesdays\, 5:30 pm\, Evening Prayer – This quiet spiritual practice can provide peace\, calm\, and perspective through the crazy pace and demands of our secular Christmas season. We will offer Evening Prayer from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. each Tuesday evening in the Chapel during the Season of Advent. If you would like to assist in leading Evening Prayer or reading one of the lessons\, please contact Sarah Benton at swbentonvt@gmail.com or 802-579-2185.\n  Thursdays\, 5:30pm\, Contemplative Service – Chant\, scripture and silent meditation incommunity.
