SUMMARY:Lives of Courage & Faith Lenten Series
DESCRIPTION:The times are difficult.   They call for courage and faith. – Thomas Merton \nLives of Faith and Courage is a series where we will learn about five very different\, inspiring and faithful individuals and learn how they respond (or have responded) to various world challenges with amazing vision\, imagination and action.   Some of these individuals are still alive\, others have died.   Some of these individuals are well-known\, others are not. \nThe format of each session will involve a presentation and a discussion.   We will end with a brief time of worship and prayer in the form of Compline.   All are welcome – please invite friends and neighbors who might be interested! \nThe schedule for our Lenten evenings will be: \n\nSimple dinner in the Undercroft\, 5:15 – 6 pm\nProgram in the Meeting Room\, 6-7pm\nCompline\, 7-7:15pm\n\nPlease come for any or all parts of the evening. \nProgram Schedule \n\nTuesday\, February 16\, Tom Tull:  Pay Attention and Do Something! Presented by Thad Bennett What do you do when you find yourself in the midst of illness/death and no one wants to pay attention?  You organize\, you gather\, you pray and you change the culture of the Episcopal Church forever.  The Rev. Thad Bennett will talk about his friend\, Tom Tull (1942-1995)\, who\, with a small band of followers\, changed the way the Episcopal Church (and later the country) related to HIV/AIDS.  Tom’s example continues to challenge Thad about how best to respond to the needs of people around us.  Come hear Thad talk about Tom\, his witness and ministry and its affect upon Thad’s ministry in the 1980s and beyond.

SUMMARY:St. Michael's Women's Retreat
DESCRIPTION: Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life \nSt. Michael’s Women’s Retreat\, February 5-7 \nHallelujah Farm\, Chesterfield\, NH \nWomen of St. Michael’s!   You are invited to come away for a time of story-telling\, prayer\, play\, conversation\, nurture and rest in a beautiful\, sacred setting.   This is the first time in recent history that St. Michael’s has offered a women’s retreat. The idea arose out of a desire of many of us to deepen our relationships with the women at St. Michael’s in a prayerful and spacious setting where we weren’t “doing” but just “being” together.   The setting of the retreat is the Lower Farm\, a beautifully restored farmhouse from the 1700s.   You can check out the Lower Farm at http://www.hallelujahfarm.com/new-the-lower-farm.html \nWe have planned the retreat around the theme of “Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life.”   To this end\, we will explore questions about ways of approaching our daily life and work with an awareness of God’s presence in the midst of all we do.   Between more focused times of learning\, there will be time for rest\, conversation\, hiking\, eating and basking in the warmth of the fireplace. \nIf you are interested in attending this retreat\, please fill out the registration form found on St. Michael’s website\, www.stmichaelsvermont.org \, under “news”  or contact Jeanie Crosby and she will send you a form. The retreat will begin on Friday evening\, February 5 and end after lunch on Sunday\, February 7.   Space is limited\, so please sign up as soon as possible.   If you have questions about the retreat\, please feel free to ask one of us\, or email Mary Lindquist at mary@stmichaelsvermont.org \nThe suggested donation to help us cover the costs of room and board is $200.  Sliding scale for overnight donation is $100-$200.     \n There is also the option to come to the retreat just for Saturday during the day.   The suggested donation for Saturday Day Retreat is $35 (scholarships to cover the day donation are available).   \nWe are very excited about this opportunity for us to come together for this special time. \n– The 2015 Women’s Retreat Planning Team (Mary Lindquist\, Leigh Marthe\, Liz Vick\, Karen Guthrie and Jean Smith) \n  \n

SUMMARY:NEW Choir School Primer Level Begins
DESCRIPTION:CHOIR SCHOOL LEVEL ONE: The Choir School is a comprehensive choral training program for children founded in the spring of 2014 by choral director Susan Dedell. Due to the success of the program\, the choir school is expanding! Beginning on Thursday\, February 4\, the Choir School will offer a new class specially designed for incoming singers ages 6\,7or 8. The program runs for a half hour from 3:45-4:15\, although children may arrive as early as 3:30 for a healthy snack. \nIn this half hour\, students will learn basic concepts of rhythm\, pitch and “choircraft” in addition to singing some wonderful music. No prior musical experience is needed\, just the love of singing and the desire to learn more. Although the program is funded and hosted by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, no church affiliation is necessary. In addition to the thrill of singing with others\, choral singing is a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. The Choir School programs are free of charge. Talk to director Susan Dedell if you have any questions or need more information. Susan can be contacted at sdedell@sover.net\, by phone at 802-348-7735\, or leave a message at the church office\, 802 254-6048.

SUMMARY:The Longest Night Service
DESCRIPTION:The holiday season can magnify what is going on in our lives\, including pain and loss. “Peace on earth\,” or even peace in our hearts\, may seem an impossible dream. Sadness and memories may seem over- whelming at a time when joy and celebration are expected. The Longest Night is a service of hope for all who carry sorrow of any kind. Join us in this inclusive service\, during which we honor the burdens we bear and claim the promise of light that follows even the darkest night. We hope that the music\, readings\, candles\, and chants may help us to find the comfort we need and strengthen the connection we share. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Christmas Pageant Practice Begins
DESCRIPTION:CALLING TODDLERS\, CHILDREN AND TEENS! JOIN ST. MICHAEL’S CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT AND HELP BRING THE NATIVITY TO LIFE FOR OUR PARISH! We’ve been doing our own Vermont Nativity for several years now and will continue to do so\, modifying to fit the company and adding\, of course\, any new elements that pageanteers invent. Recent pageants\, for instance\, have been blessed with flocks of free-range angels and sheep. Word is that we have a Jesus.\nWe’ll rehearse: Sunday mornings 9:00-10:00 a.m. (during Sunday school) starting… \n\n  November 29: Talk briefly about the story and hear what role each child would like to play.\n  December 6: Run-through the script with pageanteers in the roles they’ve chosen; determine what we want to change and start “blocking.”\n  December 13: Annie will be out of town; we’ll still rehearse\, but the plan is tba.\n  December 20: Finish all blocking; run through with all lines assigned\, with music andwith props.\n  December 23: Dress rehearsal at 4 PM.\n  December 24: All should arrive at 3:15; The pageant is at 4:00 p.m.We invite youth from outside the Parish to join in\, too. If you have friends from school or the neighborhood who’d like to be part of the pageantry\, please encourage them to come to do so. SUMMARY:Advent Seasonal Offering Begin
DESCRIPTION:OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER AND REFLECTION IN ADVENT: While Advent is meant to a time for quiet reflection and anticipation\, we all know that it is often the busiest\, most stressful time of the year. At St. Michael’s this year\, we are offering three brief (30 minute) weekly opportunities to come together in prayer in the inviting warmth of the candlelit Chapel. These gatherings are not meant to be “one more thing to do” but a way to insert some prayerful spaciousness into the season.\n\n Mondays\, 5:30 pm\, “Praying the Rosary” – This is an opportunity for us to learn the practice of praying the rosary together. We will learn the Anglican Rosary and will have extra rosaries available for those who do not have one of their own. \n\n\n\n\n\n  Tuesdays\, 5:30 pm\, Evening Prayer – This quiet spiritual practice can provide peace\, calm\, and perspective through the crazy pace and demands of our secular Christmas season. We will offer Evening Prayer from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. each Tuesday evening in the Chapel during the Season of Advent. If you would like to assist in leading Evening Prayer or reading one of the lessons\, please contact Sarah Benton at swbentonvt@gmail.com or 802-579-2185.\n  Thursdays\, 5:30pm\, Contemplative Service – Chant\, scripture and silent meditation incommunity.

SUMMARY:All Saints' Feast Day
DESCRIPTION:ALL SAINTS’ DAY CELEBRATED NEXT SUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 1 \n\n\n\n\nI have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints\, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. – Paul’s letter to the Ephesians \nOn November 1st St. Michael’s will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’ at both the 8 am and the 10:15 am service. During this service\, we will remember those saints who have gone before us and loved ones who have died\, as well as recognize ourselves as those ‘saints’ who have been called to follow Jesus with our whole selves. On this day\, we will remember in our prayers those who have died during the last year. \n**If you have people you would like to be named in the prayers\, please add them to the book in the back of the church. \n** Also\, if you have pictures of loved ones who have died whose lives you want to give thanks for\, we will provide two tables in the chancel area (in front of the altar and in the corner) as a visible reminder of the saints who have come before us for worship that day. \n** Because this is a major feast day\, we will have incense at the 10:15 am service.

SUMMARY:The Feast of St. Francis Earth Mass
DESCRIPTION:FRANCIS DAY\, SUNDAY OCTOBER 4\, 10:15 am: We will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with the Missa Gaia (Earth Mass)! This is going to be a wonderful\, spirit-filled celebration\, with music that will move you! Our adult choir will be joined by the children of the Choir School\, and guest instrumentalists. The mass was one of the first contributions made by Paul Winter when he became the artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC.\, and it has become an annual event there that attracts literally thousands. In addition to the instrumentation\, the voices of wolves\, whales\, and birds are woven into the piece\, sometimes even as the melody. The best thing about the piece\, in my opinion\, is that it captures and involves the spiritual sense of joy AND gratitude. And aren’t we all filled with just that as we enter the Vermont autumn? Let us bless the Lord!

SUMMARY:Parenting as a Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:“PARENTING AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE” BEGINS THIS SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 27 AT 9 AM: Is it possible that the demands of parenting — changing diapers\, arbitrating sibling disputes\, reading a bed-time stories\, negotiating screen time\, surviving toddler/teen tantrums—can be understood as a spiritual practice? Parenting as a Spiritual Practice is an opportunity for parents of children and youth to come together and explore their struggles and joys in the endeavor of parenting. Each month\, we will explore a different topic (communication\, life/work balance\, Grace & parenting\, etc.). At the first gathering we will discuss which topics we would like to cover during the year. Beginning this Sunday\, the group will meet on the last Sunday of the month\, from 9-10am in the Nursery School (downstairs). Sunday school is available for children 3 and up and nursery care is available for children under 3. The group will be facilitated by Christy Fritz. Please contact Christy (fritzfive@gmail.com) or Mary Lindquist (mary@stmichaelsvermont.org) if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Choir School Begins New Session
DESCRIPTION:Choir School will begin on Tuesday\, September 15\, from 3:45–4:45 p.m. We welcome all children who love to sing and want to learn more\, ages 8–14. We have an exciting year ahead of us! First\, the Choir School will be learning the children’s part of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia\, which will be presented on the Feast of St. Francis\, October 4. This is the piece that is done at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine every year\, and it is a truly joyful and soulful celebration of Creation. Then on to the preparations for the December Festival of Lights\, a Lessons and Carols- type service that we originated last year (and it was magical!). A new mystery play is in store for them next\, based on the story of Jonah (and of course\, that famous whale). This will be presented in Lent\, and\nwe know it will be a rich experience for them. The Choir School will then end the year with a program of music composed by our own Paul Dedell\, using poetry that they will be writing throughout the fall reflecting their own experiences of the sacred. I am very excited about this particular project\, as they will be part of a poetic/musical process that is at the core of creative expression. \nIn addition to learning a lot of music\, the Choir School teaches children basic musicianship skills\, literacy\, and vocal technique. I believe that it is also a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. And of course\, the gift of music offers everyone a way to connect with God. Talk to Susan if you have any questions or need more info! Contact her at sdedell@sover.net\, or call her at 802-348-7735\, or leave a message at the church office.
