SUMMARY:Altered States Chant Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ALTERED STATES 2015\, November 14 & 15 — Do you want to learn more about chanting/singing in different faith traditions? Are you curious to find out what a deeply wise Sufi scholar\, a quietly warm Indian Hindu\, and a funny-to-the-bone Jewish rabbi have to say about the power of singing and chanting in their spiritual practices? Want to hear about the latest scientific research exploring how the body and mind is affected by each of these practices? ALTERED STATES 2015 is the place to be!! Dr. Amer Latif\, Shital Kinkhabwala\, Rebbe Moshe Waldoks\, and Dr. Lesley Fishelman will be our guest presenters and teachers on the weekend of November 14-15. Thanks to a generous gift from the Diocese of Vermont\, the cost of the weekend is very affordable.

SUMMARY:All Saints' Feast Day
DESCRIPTION:ALL SAINTS’ DAY CELEBRATED NEXT SUNDAY\, NOVEMBER 1 \n\n\n\n\nI have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints\, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. – Paul’s letter to the Ephesians \nOn November 1st St. Michael’s will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’ at both the 8 am and the 10:15 am service. During this service\, we will remember those saints who have gone before us and loved ones who have died\, as well as recognize ourselves as those ‘saints’ who have been called to follow Jesus with our whole selves. On this day\, we will remember in our prayers those who have died during the last year. \n**If you have people you would like to be named in the prayers\, please add them to the book in the back of the church. \n** Also\, if you have pictures of loved ones who have died whose lives you want to give thanks for\, we will provide two tables in the chancel area (in front of the altar and in the corner) as a visible reminder of the saints who have come before us for worship that day. \n** Because this is a major feast day\, we will have incense at the 10:15 am service.

SUMMARY:The Feast of St. Francis Earth Mass
DESCRIPTION:FRANCIS DAY\, SUNDAY OCTOBER 4\, 10:15 am: We will be celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with the Missa Gaia (Earth Mass)! This is going to be a wonderful\, spirit-filled celebration\, with music that will move you! Our adult choir will be joined by the children of the Choir School\, and guest instrumentalists. The mass was one of the first contributions made by Paul Winter when he became the artist in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC.\, and it has become an annual event there that attracts literally thousands. In addition to the instrumentation\, the voices of wolves\, whales\, and birds are woven into the piece\, sometimes even as the melody. The best thing about the piece\, in my opinion\, is that it captures and involves the spiritual sense of joy AND gratitude. And aren’t we all filled with just that as we enter the Vermont autumn? Let us bless the Lord!

SUMMARY:Parenting as a Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:“PARENTING AS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE” BEGINS THIS SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 27 AT 9 AM: Is it possible that the demands of parenting — changing diapers\, arbitrating sibling disputes\, reading a bed-time stories\, negotiating screen time\, surviving toddler/teen tantrums—can be understood as a spiritual practice? Parenting as a Spiritual Practice is an opportunity for parents of children and youth to come together and explore their struggles and joys in the endeavor of parenting. Each month\, we will explore a different topic (communication\, life/work balance\, Grace & parenting\, etc.). At the first gathering we will discuss which topics we would like to cover during the year. Beginning this Sunday\, the group will meet on the last Sunday of the month\, from 9-10am in the Nursery School (downstairs). Sunday school is available for children 3 and up and nursery care is available for children under 3. The group will be facilitated by Christy Fritz. Please contact Christy (fritzfive@gmail.com) or Mary Lindquist (mary@stmichaelsvermont.org) if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Choir School Begins New Session
DESCRIPTION:Choir School will begin on Tuesday\, September 15\, from 3:45–4:45 p.m. We welcome all children who love to sing and want to learn more\, ages 8–14. We have an exciting year ahead of us! First\, the Choir School will be learning the children’s part of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia\, which will be presented on the Feast of St. Francis\, October 4. This is the piece that is done at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine every year\, and it is a truly joyful and soulful celebration of Creation. Then on to the preparations for the December Festival of Lights\, a Lessons and Carols- type service that we originated last year (and it was magical!). A new mystery play is in store for them next\, based on the story of Jonah (and of course\, that famous whale). This will be presented in Lent\, and\nwe know it will be a rich experience for them. The Choir School will then end the year with a program of music composed by our own Paul Dedell\, using poetry that they will be writing throughout the fall reflecting their own experiences of the sacred. I am very excited about this particular project\, as they will be part of a poetic/musical process that is at the core of creative expression. \nIn addition to learning a lot of music\, the Choir School teaches children basic musicianship skills\, literacy\, and vocal technique. I believe that it is also a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. And of course\, the gift of music offers everyone a way to connect with God. Talk to Susan if you have any questions or need more info! Contact her at sdedell@sover.net\, or call her at 802-348-7735\, or leave a message at the church office.

SUMMARY:Coming Home: How and Why to live a Deep-Hearted Life
DESCRIPTION:On  Saturday morning June 13 (9am-12pm)\, Will Duncan\, teacher of meditation and scripture from many traditions\, will be at St. Michael’s to share learnings from his recent three-year\, silent retreat in Arizona. Duncan studied for many years with Reverend Murray Rogers\, an Anglican priest who lived in India and devoted his ministry to working with Christians and Hindus\, and he continues to seek spiritual wisdom in the Christian\, Hindu and Buddhist traditions. He teaches meditation\, yoga and scripture around the world\, bringing down-to-earth sincerity\, humor and joy to his classes. You can check out his website at www.willduncan.org. \nWill writes: With meditation I teach systematic stillness practices to a wide variety of populations from people suffering with extreme addictions to business executives to busy moms… In the world of yoga I focus on helping people access joy in their practice and feel gratitude for\, with\, and in their bodies. After a three year solitary yoga and meditation retreat I began to experience yoga as a kind of moving celebratory prayer and I attempt to share that with others…My interest in scripture is in combining the brilliance of western psychology with the profundity of ancient wisdom. I seek to make the wisdom traditions applicable to real people in a world of addiction\, heartbreak\, and stress. As alcohol addiction is highly dangerous it is always better to consult experts from refocus rehab as they can help you to get rid off alcohol addiction. \nMark your calendars for two days of insightful\, humorous and deep discussions of how and why to live a deep-hearted life.

SUMMARY:Recovery Sunday
DESCRIPTION:RECOVERY SUNDAY\, APRIL 26: At both 8 and 10:15 services next Sunday\, we celebrate God in action in people’s lives today. Recovery comes in every shape and form. In a real sense it is a name for the Spiritual Journey as we seek to reclaim and recover our identity as children of God. A member of St. Michael’s\, Megan B\, will share her experiences of recovery within and around her. The service will reflect this theme in readings and prayers. Recovery Sunday is becoming a tradition at St. Michael’s having been celebrated in the past three years.

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service\, 7 pm
DESCRIPTION:The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word\, madatum (commandment)\, and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34) to his disciples at the Last Supper.   The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: washing of the disciples’ feed and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion.   The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday\, March 29\, 8 & 10:15am
DESCRIPTION:Palm Sunday\, March 29\, 8 & 10:15am. This special liturgy begins with a procession (led by a real donkey and some spirited music) of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion.  The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!” \n
