SUMMARY:Three in the Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 14 at 7:00 pm\, the dynamic team of Finn Campman and Paul Dedell present Three in the Wilderness\, a modern mystery play. Featuring vocals by the inimitable Zara Bode\, the evocative and sophisticated puppets of Finn Campman\, and narrated by local legend Tony Barrand\,  this show explores the complexities of Christ’s Temptation in the Wilderness.  The show will be presented one time only at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Brattleboro before it travels up to be performed in Burlington. \nComposer Paul Dedell’s original music provides an exotic soundscape\, evoking a feeling of the Middle East. Speaking about the music\, he says\, “I chose the violin\, resonating guitar\, harmonium\, and percussion for this score. I like the sound a lot — the combination of harmonium and resonating guitar creates a completely new sound that is almost unidentifiable. The violin soars over this\, and matches the energy of each of the temptations –frenetic\, soulful\, questioning.  I’m excited to have violinist Moby Pearson playing for this show\, as well as Stefan Amidon on percussion.  I play the resonating guitar.  Stefan and I occasionally sing with Tony and Zara – both of whom really knock my socks off.” \nFinn Campman designed and built the puppet figures of Christ\, the Devil\, and a third character known as the Fool. Campman is well known for his work with Sandglass Theater\, and is co-founder and director of The Company of Strangers.  Dedell comments\, “Finn captures magic through objects. Whether it is a bird or bread roll\, these objects carry and convey the emotional weight of the story. The puppets themselves are beautiful\, and Finn and his fellow puppeteers Kirk Murphy and Helen Schmidt are highly practiced at their craft. The respect they have for the puppets as living creations is profound.” \nIn addition to the music that Dedell composed for this production\, he included and arranged songs that bring the text to life in a contemporary manner. Among them are country songs such as “There Stands the Glass”\, traditional ballads and political songs such as “The Man who Waters the Workers Beer”\, old hymns\, and fittingly\, a blues song of Robert Johnson\, “Me and the Devil.” \nThe performance will be at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, which is located at the corner of Bradley Avenue and Putney Road. It is part of a series of events produced by Winged Productions\, Paul and Susan Dedell\, directors.  Suggested admission donation is $10. For more information call 348-7735 or wingedproductions.vt@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Choir School Begins New Session
DESCRIPTION:REHEARSALS START ON JAN. 20\, 3:45-4:45  for “Out of the Lion’s Mouth”  \nA refresher about the project: \n“Out of the Lion’s Mouth” is a new musical by Paul Dedell inspired by the medieval “mystery plays”  and written for children’s voices.  It tells the Old Testament story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den.  Children will be singing the songs of the Satraps\, who were the petty (and not to be trusted!)  officials of King Darius the Mede\, as well as the songs of the infamous hungry lions of the lion pit\, and of course\, Daniel.  There will be group choral singing\, and opportunities for small group singing\, and short solos. \nBoth the Satraps and the lions sing fun\, tuneful\, and boisterous songs full of attitude and character.  It is a pretty wild story\, where eventually all the Satraps are eaten by the lions but Daniel is saved by his integrity and faith.  Fun is had by all. \nThe performances of “Out of the Lion’s Mouth” are on March 20\, 21\, and 22 and will take place at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. A small band of professional musicians will accompany the show. \nI look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Christmas Pageant Practice Begins!
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTMAS EVE PAGEANT REHEARSALS START DECEMBER 7: Calling toddlers\, children and teens! Join St. Michael’s Christmas Eve pageant and help bring the Nativity to life for our parish! We’ve been doing our own Vermont Nativity for several years now and will continue to do so\, modifying to fit the company and adding\, of course\, any new elements that pageanteers invent. Recent pageants\, for instance\, have been blessed with flocks of free-range angels! \nHere are the roles we need to fill:  innkeeper’s assistant\, innkeeper\,  Mary\, Joseph\, Angel Gabriel\, angels\, shepherds\, wise wo/men\, starbearer\,  and readers (all 10- to 18-year-olds are welcome as readers!) We’ll rehearse:  Sunday mornings 9:00-10:00 a.m. (during Sunday school) starting December 7\, when we’ll talk briefly about the story we’ll tell and hear what role each child would like to play. On December 14 and 21\, the rehearsals will be more detailed. In addition\, we’ll have a session with readers only at a mutually convenient time. Dress rehearsal will be on December 23 at 4 PM. The pageant will be at 4:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve\, Wednesday\, December 24. \nWe invite kids from outside the Parish to join in\, too. If you have friends from school or the neighborhood who’d like to be part of the pageantry\, please encourage them to come to do so.
