DESCRIPTION:L’ARCHE IN VERMONT? AN EXPLORATORY GATHERING AT ST. MICHAEL’S\, SUNDAY 8/25 3-5 PM: St. Michael’s is hosting a gathering with members of the L‘Arche Boston community and with Vermonters of all interests and abilities. The goal will be  to better understand L‘Arche\, to imagine what is possible in this state\, and to discuss next steps. The journey to start a community takes years; this is an exploratory first step.  L’Arche communities “provide homes and workplaces where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together as peers\, create inclusive communities of faith and friendship\, and transform society through relationships that cross social boundaries” (www.larcheusa.org). Today\, there are 147 member communities of L’Arche in 35 countries. DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day celebrated on Sunday\, November 3 \nI have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints\, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. – Paul’s letter to the Ephesians \nOn November 3\, St. Michael’s will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’ at both the 8 am and the 10:15 am service.  During this service\, we will remember those saints who have gone before us and loved ones who have died\, as well as recognize ourselves as those ‘saints’ who have been called to follow Jesus with our whole selves.   On this day\, we will remember in our prayers those who have died during the last year. \n\nIf you have people you would like to be named in the prayers\, please add them to the book in the back of the church.\nIf you have pictures of loved ones who have died whose lives you want to give thanks for\, we will provide two tables in the chancel area (in front of the altar and in the corner) as a visible reminder of the saints who have come before us for worship that day.\nBecause this is a major feast day\, we will have incense at the 10:15 am service.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:TAIZE SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE\, NOVEMBER 3\, 4 P.M:  Our candlelit service at St. Michael’s as we celebrate All Saints’ Day features simple harmonious chants\, short readings or prayers\, periods of silence\, and the lighting of candles as we remember those whom we love but see no more.  Those who wish may bring a photo or a memorial object to place near the candle lighting area. Taize gets its name from the Taize community in France\, which was founded in 1940 and which served as a shelter for political refugees fleeing persecution during World War II. Thousands of pilgrims still travel to the ecumenical\, monastic community of Taize yearly to attend teachings on trust\, peace and reconciliation.

Childcare with activities will be available at supper and afterward.  5:15 – Evensong; 6:00 – simple supper in the undercroft; 6:30 – Imaginative Prayer: Listening for God’s in your life through the Advent stories. \n

SUMMARY:Advent Lessons and Carols
DESCRIPTION:A very special Lessons & Carols is coming!  The mystery\, beauty\, and deep joy that the Advent season brings is often distilled into great clarity each year as we gather to celebrate the liturgy that we know as Lessons & Carols.  This year\, our choir is journeying even more fully into the radiant season\, as we present and share with you the “Great O Antiphons” of Advent. These 7 ancient chants date back to the 6th century. They were such an important part of the early Christian community’s experience that it was said that during Advent\, one “kept the Great O” in preparation for the day of the incarnation. \nThese 7 chants are the various names of Christ\, with each name representing a Scriptural attribute. The seven names are: Sapientia (wisdom); Adonai (Lord); Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse); Clavis David (Key of David); Oriens (Dayspring); Rex Gentium (King of All Peoples); and Emmanuel (God With Us).  The names are remarkable in that\, for the most part\, they are descriptive of ways in which Christ both fulfills prophecy and extends our understanding of the nature of God. \nTo accompany the chants\, the choir will sing 5 anthems that reflect the nature or emotion of the names of Christ. As before\, the congregation will join in the singing of Advent hymns\, and the lessons of the season will be read. \nAll of this\, with candlelight\, deep fellowship\, and with the gratitude of the great gift of Love that is coming! Please join us as we “Keep the Great O” together! \n

DESCRIPTION:The holiday season can magnify what is going on in our lives\, including pain and loss.  “Peace on Earth\,” or even peace in our hearts\, may seem an impossible dream. Sadness and memories may seem overwhelming at a time when joy and celebration are expected. The Longest Night is a service of hope for all who carry sorrow of any kind.  Join us in this inclusive service\, during which we honor the burdens we bear and claim the promise of light that follows even the darkest night. We hope that the cello playing\, readings\, candles\, chants and naming the pain may help us to find the comfort we need and strengthen the connection we share.  All are welcome. \n

DESCRIPTION:ALL PARISH MEETING \nSATURDAY\, JANUARY 11\, 2020 \n9:15 am to 11:30 am in the Undercroft \nCoffee\, Tea\, and Light Refreshments \nChildcare as requested \n“Will you seek to serve Christ in all persons\, loving your neighbor as yourself?” \n“Will you strive for justice and peace among all people\, and respect the dignity of every human being?”    (Baptismal Covenant\, BCP pg 293-4) \nWe all say\, “YES”!  Yet\, how do we proclaim our commitment to these vows? \nYour Vestry invites you to an All Parish Meeting.  With this new year\, come engage with us as we look forward to a process of mission discernment.   This conversation will help us find outward ways we can SHOW our love of God in Christ and make that love manifest in the world. \nWe look to have an open conversation at this gathering that reflects what we stand for in a scripture-based way and how we are committed to social and racial injustice in our community and our country.  \nWhat we hear from our parish family in this conversation will guide us in prayer\, community outreach\, educational engagement\, and non-violent action. That we may proclaim the Christ-like life that we seek\, not just within our individual selves but also outwardly in our community.  \nHelp us explore these questions in our mission discernment: \nMISSION DISCERNMENT QUESTIONS \n1)   How are you called to be a follower of Christ in the community? Are there specific actions you take as part of your call? \n2)   What has worked well for you? Have there been frustrations or barriers? \n3)   What values underlie your actions? Do you think our congregation has some shared values? \n4)   Given the challenging issues in our community and our world and given our values\, how might Jesus be calling us as a congregation to do more?
