SUMMARY:Choir School (Level 1) begins
DESCRIPTION:THE CHOIR SCHOOL: MUSIC THAT FEEDS MIND AND SOUL \nThe fall session of The Choir School is beginning in September\, and all children who love to sing are welcome to join one of our programs. The Choir School is a children’s choral program that nurtures and inspires student achievement through quality music education and the joy of choral singing. It was founded in the spring of 2014 by Susan Dedell\, and now offers two levels. \nLEVEL ONE CHOIR is for children ages 8-10. Students in this prep choir will learn basic vocal skills\, beginning note reading\, and general “choircraft” in addition to singing some wonderful music. Little or no prior musical experience is required. This group meets on Thursdays at 3:45-4:30 and begins on September 15. \nLEVEL TWO CHOIR is for singers aged 11-16. In this more advanced choir\, students expand their skills in vocal technique\, sight reading\, and harmony singing. They perform several individual programs per year\, including the spring “Mystery Play”. New incoming students should have at least one year of some prior musical experience. This group meets on Tuesdays at 3:45-4:45 and begins on September 13. \n In addition to the thrill of singing with others\, choral singing is a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. \nBoth programs are free of charge and are open to all children who love to sing and want to learn more.  The program is sponsored by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, but no church affiliation of any kind is required. Interested students are encouraged to contact director at sdedell@sover.net\, by phone at 802-348-7735\, or through St. Michael’s at 802-254-6048. “When children sing beautifully\, it speaks directly to the soul.” \n  \n

Robert A. Jonas\, Ed.D.\, M.T.S.\, is the founder of The Empty Bell\, a contemplative sanctuary (www.emptybell.org). Trained as a psychologist and theologian\, Jonas is a retreat leader\, musician\, and video artist. His publications include\, among others\, Rebecca (Crossroad)\, Henri Nouwen (Orbis) and The Essential Henri Nouwen (Shambhala). This retreat is free and open to all.

Louise writes\, “There is not a day goes by that she does not use the Enneagram material in one way or another.” \nWhat is the Enneagram? \nThe Enneagram of Personality is a powerful tool for understanding ourselves and other people in our lives.  In this system of nine personality types\, the Enneagram symbol provides an excellent organizing framework for a wealth of information about human spirituality\, personality\, learning and growth.   In addition\, understanding the Enneagram allows for significant progress in the spiritual journey for both individuals and communities. \nThe Enneagram of Personality describes nine distinct character types\, each with its own particular point of view\, patterns of thought and behavior\, and patterns in work and in relationship. \nLouise writes\, “In our workshop\, we will become familiar with the nine personality types.  Exercises of attention and energy placement will help create a whole picture of each different personality style.  We will share experiences in order to understand the underlying motivational pieces that identify type.  Many of us will recognize ourselves and those with whom we live and work.” \nThis workshop is free and open to all. \n

SUMMARY:Choral Evensong\, 5 pm
DESCRIPTION:EVENSONG LED BY ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR — WITH A NEW TWIST ON THE MUSIC! BE THERE on Sunday\, April 24 at 5 pm for a joyful celebration of spring and God’s blessings. This Evensong we will be introducing (dare I say\, the Vermont premier — if not a New England first?) the wonderful settings of British composer Bob Chilcott\, with an anthem by his contemporary Will Todd. And now……a little history! \n\n\n\n\n\n*What is Evensong? Evensong is the sung version of Evening Prayer\, which was \n\n\n\n\nitself created in 1662 by combining the more ancient services Vespers and Compline. \n\n\n\n\n**What is the music for Evensong? Evensong always contains a musical rendition of the two principal canticles in Evening Prayer\, the Magnificat (the Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimittis (the Song of Simeon). It can contain additional anthems and hymns as well. \n***Does Evensong ever change? The wonderful thing about Evensong is that it allows for continual renewal through the vehicle of music and readings. But it also has an incredibly long and meaningful place in the Anglican church. \n****Is it good for all ages? YES! Because it is a rich sensory experience\, with no sermons or lengthy creeds\, it engages and touches the heart. Evensong was my son’s favorite service when he was a teenager.

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service
DESCRIPTION:The word maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum (commandment) and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” to his disciples at the Last Supper (John 13:34). The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last Supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: the washing of the disciples’ feet and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion. The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come.

SUMMARY:Mystery Play: The Man who Defied God
DESCRIPTION:The Man Who Defied God is the third in a series of original mystery plays written by Paul Dedell\, and tells the complex story of the prophet Jonah.\nAlthough the story of Jonah is set in the ancient Middle East during a time of conflict between the Jews and the Assyrians\, the political and social conflict that is at the heart of the story is startlingly contemporary.  Jonah\, an ordinary Jew\, was commanded by God to bring a message of mercy and forgiveness to the enemy Assyrians in order to prevent them from ultimate destruction.  Jonah runs away because he cannot bring himself to extend compassion to a people he hates and who hate him.  The Man Who Defied God follows Jonah on his journey through stormy seas\, the belly of the whale\, the fiery heat of the desert; witnesses his encounter with giant plants and devouring worms; and witnesses his struggle as he wrestles with God’s mandate to show love for those unlike him. \nPaul dove into the story of Jonah with relish. Intrigued by the story of a man of faith who attempted to hide from God\, he began writing the piece last fall\, and discovered a lot about the story — and maybe himself — in the process. \nHe discovered that initially he didn’t like Jonah. “I thought of him as self centered\, with little compassion for others.  It was difficult to find a way in to his character as a result. After wrestling with the story for a while\, I realized that I was regarding Jonah through the same narrow lens that he saw through — a perspective where people are either good or bad\, virtuous or evil.” \nAs Paul worked forward\, he began to understand – even identify —with Jonah. “Jonah had plenty of physical courage\, and plenty of commitment\, but his world view was almost unavoidably limited by what he knew. Jonah saw himself as a ‘right-thinking’\, right-acting man.  Challenged to expand his vision\, he gave in to fear.” \nThis internal conflict provided the motivation for his composition. “Fear limits our ability to live a full life\, to be fully ourselves\, whether it is fear of failure\, fear of rejection\, or fear of actual physical destruction. All of us are influenced by how we’re brought up\, by what we perceive as ‘right’ — and it sometimes takes a strange and hard journey to start releasing those fears.” \nThe message of the story is as timely today as it was thousands of years ago. We have a lot to learn from Jonah! \nMusic and Libretto by Paul Dedell\nMusical Direction by Susan Dedell\nwith Moby Pearson\, violin\n7 pm  Saturday\, March 19\n3 pm  Sunday\, March 20

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday\, 8 & !0:15 am
DESCRIPTION:This special liturgy begins with a procession of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion. The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!”
