SUMMARY:St. Michael's Women's Retreat
DESCRIPTION: Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life \nSt. Michael’s Women’s Retreat\, February 5-7 \nHallelujah Farm\, Chesterfield\, NH \nWomen of St. Michael’s!   You are invited to come away for a time of story-telling\, prayer\, play\, conversation\, nurture and rest in a beautiful\, sacred setting.   This is the first time in recent history that St. Michael’s has offered a women’s retreat. The idea arose out of a desire of many of us to deepen our relationships with the women at St. Michael’s in a prayerful and spacious setting where we weren’t “doing” but just “being” together.   The setting of the retreat is the Lower Farm\, a beautifully restored farmhouse from the 1700s.   You can check out the Lower Farm at http://www.hallelujahfarm.com/new-the-lower-farm.html \nWe have planned the retreat around the theme of “Awakening to the Sacred in Daily Life.”   To this end\, we will explore questions about ways of approaching our daily life and work with an awareness of God’s presence in the midst of all we do.   Between more focused times of learning\, there will be time for rest\, conversation\, hiking\, eating and basking in the warmth of the fireplace. \nIf you are interested in attending this retreat\, please fill out the registration form found on St. Michael’s website\, www.stmichaelsvermont.org \, under “news”  or contact Jeanie Crosby and she will send you a form. The retreat will begin on Friday evening\, February 5 and end after lunch on Sunday\, February 7.   Space is limited\, so please sign up as soon as possible.   If you have questions about the retreat\, please feel free to ask one of us\, or email Mary Lindquist at mary@stmichaelsvermont.org \nThe suggested donation to help us cover the costs of room and board is $200.  Sliding scale for overnight donation is $100-$200.     \n There is also the option to come to the retreat just for Saturday during the day.   The suggested donation for Saturday Day Retreat is $35 (scholarships to cover the day donation are available).   \nWe are very excited about this opportunity for us to come together for this special time. \n– The 2015 Women’s Retreat Planning Team (Mary Lindquist\, Leigh Marthe\, Liz Vick\, Karen Guthrie and Jean Smith) \n  \n

Canon Edward Rodman\, presented by Craig Hammond.   Ed has been a rare force\, sometimes a hurricane\, who has made a huge impact on both my life and the work of the Episcopal Church over the past 50 years. We were classmates at the Episcopal Theological School (now EDS) in the mid sixties. We shared interests\, our studies\, collaborated on our senior research paper\, split off from one another over black power in the civil rights movement\, and have come back together to share a lifetime of friendship. We’ve come together in grief and in celebration. He’s been a visionary\, a pastor\, a teacher and mentor\, and a brother. It is an honor to speak of him during these forty days we share with our Lord In prayer\, contemplation and preparation.

Joanna Macy writes\, The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on Earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world\, we’ve actually been on the way for quite a while. It is that we are beginning to wake up\, as from a millennia long sleep\, to a whole new relationship to our world\, to ourselves\, and to each other. It is her goal to help us identify our curiosity\, energy\, and strength that together we may live out the active hope our world needs now.

By age 29\, Schweitzer held doctorates in philosophy and religion\, was an acclaimed organist\, a world authority on Bach\, had published three books\, and had held positions as a church pastor\, a principal of a theological seminary\, and a university professor.  But many years earlier\, aware of the desperate medical needs of Africans\, he had decided that at age 30 he would undertake medical studies\, become a doctor and devote the rest of his life to direct service in Africa.  In 1913\, at the age of 37\, Dr. Schweitzer and his wife\, Hélène\, opened a hospital in Lambaréné\, Gabon\, and spent most of the rest of his life there\, dying there at age 90.\n\n

SUMMARY:Mystery Play: The Man who Defied God
DESCRIPTION:The Man Who Defied God is the third in a series of original mystery plays written by Paul Dedell\, and tells the complex story of the prophet Jonah.\nAlthough the story of Jonah is set in the ancient Middle East during a time of conflict between the Jews and the Assyrians\, the political and social conflict that is at the heart of the story is startlingly contemporary.  Jonah\, an ordinary Jew\, was commanded by God to bring a message of mercy and forgiveness to the enemy Assyrians in order to prevent them from ultimate destruction.  Jonah runs away because he cannot bring himself to extend compassion to a people he hates and who hate him.  The Man Who Defied God follows Jonah on his journey through stormy seas\, the belly of the whale\, the fiery heat of the desert; witnesses his encounter with giant plants and devouring worms; and witnesses his struggle as he wrestles with God’s mandate to show love for those unlike him. \nPaul dove into the story of Jonah with relish. Intrigued by the story of a man of faith who attempted to hide from God\, he began writing the piece last fall\, and discovered a lot about the story — and maybe himself — in the process. \nHe discovered that initially he didn’t like Jonah. “I thought of him as self centered\, with little compassion for others.  It was difficult to find a way in to his character as a result. After wrestling with the story for a while\, I realized that I was regarding Jonah through the same narrow lens that he saw through — a perspective where people are either good or bad\, virtuous or evil.” \nAs Paul worked forward\, he began to understand – even identify —with Jonah. “Jonah had plenty of physical courage\, and plenty of commitment\, but his world view was almost unavoidably limited by what he knew. Jonah saw himself as a ‘right-thinking’\, right-acting man.  Challenged to expand his vision\, he gave in to fear.” \nThis internal conflict provided the motivation for his composition. “Fear limits our ability to live a full life\, to be fully ourselves\, whether it is fear of failure\, fear of rejection\, or fear of actual physical destruction. All of us are influenced by how we’re brought up\, by what we perceive as ‘right’ — and it sometimes takes a strange and hard journey to start releasing those fears.” \nThe message of the story is as timely today as it was thousands of years ago. We have a lot to learn from Jonah! \nMusic and Libretto by Paul Dedell\nMusical Direction by Susan Dedell\nwith Moby Pearson\, violin\n7 pm  Saturday\, March 19\n3 pm  Sunday\, March 20

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday\, 8 & !0:15 am
DESCRIPTION:This special liturgy begins with a procession of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion. The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!”

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service
DESCRIPTION:The word maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum (commandment) and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” to his disciples at the Last Supper (John 13:34). The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last Supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: the washing of the disciples’ feet and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion. The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus’ prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come.

SUMMARY:Choral Evensong\, 5 pm
DESCRIPTION:EVENSONG LED BY ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR — WITH A NEW TWIST ON THE MUSIC! BE THERE on Sunday\, April 24 at 5 pm for a joyful celebration of spring and God’s blessings. This Evensong we will be introducing (dare I say\, the Vermont premier — if not a New England first?) the wonderful settings of British composer Bob Chilcott\, with an anthem by his contemporary Will Todd. And now……a little history! \n\n\n\n\n\n*What is Evensong? Evensong is the sung version of Evening Prayer\, which was \n\n\n\n\nitself created in 1662 by combining the more ancient services Vespers and Compline. \n\n\n\n\n**What is the music for Evensong? Evensong always contains a musical rendition of the two principal canticles in Evening Prayer\, the Magnificat (the Song of Mary) and the Nunc Dimittis (the Song of Simeon). It can contain additional anthems and hymns as well. \n***Does Evensong ever change? The wonderful thing about Evensong is that it allows for continual renewal through the vehicle of music and readings. But it also has an incredibly long and meaningful place in the Anglican church. \n****Is it good for all ages? YES! Because it is a rich sensory experience\, with no sermons or lengthy creeds\, it engages and touches the heart. Evensong was my son’s favorite service when he was a teenager.

SUMMARY:Enneagram Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Potential of the Enneagram: A Morning Workshop at St. Michael’s \nSt. Michael’s is pleased to welcome Louise Cochran to lead a morning workshop on “The Potential of the Enneagram\, “on Saturday\, April 30\, from 9am-12:30pm at St. Michael’s. \nLouise\, who has a Masters of Divinity\, has been studying and teaching the Enneagram for thirty years. She is a certified Enneagram teacher in Helen Palmer’s narrative tradition.  She has extensive experience using the Enneagram as a tool in spiritual direction and counseling and has also taught classes in many different aspects of the Enneagram including essence qualities\, subtypes\, teambuilding and leadership\, and opening to the eight types other than your own. Louise writes\, “There is not a day goes by that she does not use the Enneagram material in one way or another.” \nWhat is the Enneagram? \nThe Enneagram of Personality is a powerful tool for understanding ourselves and other people in our lives.  In this system of nine personality types\, the Enneagram symbol provides an excellent organizing framework for a wealth of information about human spirituality\, personality\, learning and growth.   In addition\, understanding the Enneagram allows for significant progress in the spiritual journey for both individuals and communities. \nThe Enneagram of Personality describes nine distinct character types\, each with its own particular point of view\, patterns of thought and behavior\, and patterns in work and in relationship. \nLouise writes\, “In our workshop\, we will become familiar with the nine personality types.  Exercises of attention and energy placement will help create a whole picture of each different personality style.  We will share experiences in order to understand the underlying motivational pieces that identify type.  Many of us will recognize ourselves and those with whom we live and work.” \nThis workshop is free and open to all. \n
