SUMMARY:Choir School (Level 2) begins
DESCRIPTION:THE CHOIR SCHOOL: MUSIC THAT FEEDS MIND AND SOUL \nThe fall session of The Choir School is beginning in September\, and all children who love to sing are welcome to join one of our programs. The Choir School is a children’s choral program that nurtures and inspires student achievement through quality music education and the joy of choral singing. It was founded in the spring of 2014 by Susan Dedell\, and now offers two levels. \nLEVEL ONE CHOIR is for children ages 8-10. Students in this prep choir will learn basic vocal skills\, beginning note reading\, and general “choircraft” in addition to singing some wonderful music. Little or no prior musical experience is required. This group meets on Thursdays at 3:45-4:30 and begins on September 15. \nLEVEL TWO CHOIR is for singers aged 11-16. In this more advanced choir\, students expand their skills in vocal technique\, sight reading\, and harmony singing. They perform several individual programs per year\, including the spring “Mystery Play”. New incoming students should have at least one year of some prior musical experience. This group meets on Tuesdays at 3:45-4:45 and begins on September 13. \nIn addition to the thrill of singing with others\, choral singing is a wonderful way to foster poise\, respect of self and others\, commitment\, leadership\, and teamwork. \nBoth programs are free of charge and are open to all children who love to sing and want to learn more.  The program is sponsored by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, but no church affiliation of any kind is required. Interested students are encouraged to contact director at sdedell@sover.net\, by phone at 802-348-7735\, or through St. Michael’s at 802-254-6048. “When children sing beautifully\, it speaks directly to the soul.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:All Saint Feast Day Observed
DESCRIPTION:On October 30th\, St. Michael’s will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’ at both the 8 am and the 10:15 am services. During this service\, we will remember those saints who have gone before us and loved ones who have died\, as well as recognize ourselves as those ‘saints’ who have been called to follow Jesus with our whole selves. On this day\, we will remember in our prayers those who have died during the last year. \n· If you have people who have died in the last year who you would like to be named in the prayers\, please add them to the book in the back of the church.\n· If you have pictures of loved ones who have died whose lives you want to give thanks for\, we will provide two tables in the chancel area (in front of the altar and in the corner) as a visible reminder of the saints who have come before us for worship that day.\n· Because this is a major feast day\, we will have incense at the 10:15 am service.

SUMMARY:From Africa to America: The Roots of the Spiritual
DESCRIPTION:  From Africa to America: The Roots of the Spiritual\, Nov. 12\, 12:30-4 \n\nOn November 12\, from 12:30-4\, Charles Mays\, Jr. will inspire\, teach\, and lead in an afternoon sure to be both fun and thought-provoking.   Our explorations will start in the varied historical sources\, including some that may be surprising\, and will reach their end in the global music of today. Far from a sterile lecture\, this will be an opportunity to immerse in the music itself through singing\, listening\, questioning\, humming\, clapping\, stomping\, and possibly shouting with transcendent joy. The spiritual has been a vehicle used to claim “personhood” by a people who were considered less than animals\, and today its modes\, rhythms\, and forms find themselves used as a key core of western music.  I hope that you will join us as we touch our inner light and “let it shine”. \n\n\nOur parish is so excited (and lucky) to be hosting an extraordinary event\, and we hope many of you will be there to take advantage of this joyful and fascinating experience!  Charles is a fantastic singer (3 seasons at the Marlboro Festival\, and the regional winner of the Metropolitan Young Artist Award)\, and an even more engaging teacher and human being.   YOU NEED NOT BE A  “SINGER”  or have any musical experience in order to participate and enjoy.  The cost of the afternoon is $40\, and includes delicious refreshments.

SUMMARY:The Longest Night Service
DESCRIPTION:The holiday season can magnify what is going on in our lives\, including pain and loss. “Peace on earth\,” or even peace in our hearts\, may seem an impossible dream. Sadness and memories may seem over- whelming at a time when joy and celebration are expected. The Longest Night is a service of hope for \n\n\n\n\nall who carry sorrow of any kind. Join us in this inclusive service\, during which we honor the burdens we bear and claim the promise of light that follows even the darkest night. We hope that the music\, readings\, candles\, and chants may help us to find the comfort we need and strengthen the connection we share. All are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Joyful Resistance CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW
DESCRIPTION:JOYFUL RESISTANCE \nLenten Series 2017\nTuesdays — March 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 & April 4 \nThis year’s Lenten Series theme is Joyful Resistance. Resistance is a way of saying “no” to actions\, movements\, values\, temptations and violations to which we object. And it is a deeply spiritual practice. Lent is traditionally a time when we practice saying “no” to things which distract or obstruct our relationship with God. As Christians\, we are called to resist all that opposes the values of our faith. While we might not always agree on those values and how they are lived out\, our faith teaches us that resistance is an important part of our calling. \n\n\n\n\n\n  March 7\,  Spiritual Resistance\, led by Mary Lindquist\n  March 14\, Practical Tools for Resistance\, led by Ann Braden\n  March 21\, Artistic Resistance\, led by Susan and Paul Dedell\n  March 28\, Strategic Civil Resistance\, led by Maurice Harris\n  April\, 4 Joyful Resistance in Practice\n\n\n\nTuesday Lenten Schedule \n* 5-6pm\, Simple supper\, in the Undercroft \n* 6-7pm Program\, in the Meeting Room\n* 7-7:20pm\, Prayers & Music \n\n\n\n\nCome for all or any of the evening’s activities!\nChildcare is available from 6-7:20 free of charge.

SUMMARY:The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir Concert
DESCRIPTION:THE PLATTSBURGH STATE GOSPEL CHOIR TO PERFORM AT ST. MICHAEL’S ON MARCH 11\, 5 – 6:30 PM: Next Saturday\, March 11\, from 5-6:30 pm\, the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir will offer a concert at St. Michael’s during their choir tour of New England. We are thankful to Imogene Drakes\, St. Michael’s member\, who used to sing in the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir and suggested St. Michael’s as a venue. The Choir’s director\, Dextor Criss\, says this about the choir: The demographics of the choir ranges from 13 years to over 73 years in age. We have local North Country members in the choir and many more from the Caribbean and as far away as Korea. Our repertoire ranges in scope; spirituals\, traditional gospel\, contemporary gospel\, Christian and praise and worship. Additionally the choir travels with a praise team as well as a praise dance group. The choir’s bio can be found at our website at www.plattsburghstategospelchoir.org
