SUMMARY:Joyful Resistance Lenten Series
DESCRIPTION:JOYFUL RESISTANCE \nLenten Series 2017\nTuesdays — March 7\, 14\, 21\, 28 & April 4 \nThis year’s Lenten Series theme is Joyful Resistance. Resistance is a way of saying “no” to actions\, movements\, values\, temptations and violations to which we object. And it is a deeply spiritual practice. Lent is traditionally a time when we practice saying “no” to things which distract or obstruct our relationship with God. As Christians\, we are called to resist all that opposes the values of our faith. While we might not always agree on those values and how they are lived out\, our faith teaches us that resistance is an important part of our calling. \n\n\n\n\n\n  March 7\,  Spiritual Resistance\, led by Mary Lindquist\n  March 14\, Practical Tools for Resistance\, led by Ann Braden\n  March 21\, Artistic Resistance\, led by Susan and Paul Dedell\n  March 28\, Strategic Civil Resistance\, led by Maurice Harris\n  April\, 4 Joyful Resistance in Practice\n\n\n\nTuesday Lenten Schedule \n* 5-6pm\, Simple supper\, in the Undercroft \n* 6-7pm Program\, in the Meeting Room\n* 7-7:20pm\, Prayers & Music

SUMMARY:Joyful Resistance Lenten Series
DESCRIPTION:Last “Joyful Resistance” Lenten Evening Program\, Tuesday\, April 4 \nPlease join us for our final session of “Joyful Resistance” on Tuesday\, April 4.   Supper is served between 5-6pm\, program is from 6-7pm and night worship is from 7-7:20pm.   Because Ann Braden’s session on March 14 was snowed out\, we rescheduled her to speak on April 4 on the topic of “Practical Tools of Resistance.”   Below is more background about Ann: \nAnn Braden is a Brattleboro-based community organizer. She founded and leads the statewide advocacy group GunSenseVT\, which helped to successfully passed a gun violence prevention bill in 2015 and is continuing to push for Universal Background Checks. She also recently started the Local Love Brigade\, a group of Vermonters banding together to respond to incidents of hate with giant helpings of love. Inspired by the simplicity and power of sending love postcards to victims of hate\, nine other states have followed suit and started Local Love Brigades of their own. Ann is part of the group putting together the Windham County Action Network (WeCAN)\, which is focused on streamlining communication to help people connect and plug in to the good work being done by grassroots organizations in the area. She is a former middle school social studies teacher and lives in town with her husband and two children.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday Services
DESCRIPTION:8 am Holy Eucharist\, \n10:15 am Holy Eucharist & Procession with Palms \n\nPalm Sunday\, April 9\, 8 & 10:15am.  This special liturgy at the 10:15 am service begins with a procession (led by a real donkey and some spirited music) of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion.  The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!”

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Service
DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday\, April 13\, 5:30 pm – The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word\, madatum (commandment)\, and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34) to his disciples at the Last Supper.   The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: washing of the disciples’ feed and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion.  The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come.  This year\, we will begin with a “Dinner Eucharist” in the Undercroft with foot & hand-washing and end in the church with the stripping of the altar.

SUMMARY:Mystery Play: Theophilia
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAY MAY 6 AT 7:30 and SUNDAY\, MAY 7 AT 4 PM— “THEOPHILIA”: Have you ever felt betrayed by a friend or family member? Have you ever been the subject of rumor or gossip? Did you ever feel so wronged that your anger led you to do or say things that were hurtful? Or maybe………….you were on the other side of these situations??! IF SO: how does forgiveness\, love\, and true healing take place? The Choir School is proud to invite you to “Theophilia”\, an original mystery play written and scripted by Paul Dedell\, with musical direction by Susan Dedell. Theophilia is based on a medieval miracle play written by the troubadour Rutebeuf in early 13th century France\, and is the story of a person who makes a pact with the devil in order to regain status and make misery for the townspeople who wronged him. Our young people have taken this subject matter to heart and they bring new life and energy into a story that is as timely today as it was 800 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nyears ago. Plan on attending one of these performances and be part of the “miracle” yourself!

SUMMARY:Recovery Sunday
DESCRIPTION:RECOVERY SUNDAY\, MAY 21: At both services on May 21\, we celebrate God in action in people’s lives. Recovery comes in every shape and form. In a real sense it is a name for the Spiritual Journey as we seek to reclaim and recover our identity as children of God. On May 21\, a member of St. Michael’s\, Ray Egan\, will share his experiences of recovery. The service reflects this theme in readings and prayers. Recovery Sunday is becoming a tradition at St. Michael’s having been celebrated in the past five years. Instead of wine\, we will use grape juice for communion on this day.

SUMMARY:“REFUGEE DISLOCATION\, FLIGHT AND MIGRATION IN AN INCREASINGLY UNWELCOMING WORLD
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL SUMMER FORUM\, SUNDAY AUGUST 6: “REFUGEE DISLOCATION\, FLIGHT AND MIGRATION IN AN INCREASINGLY UNWELCOMING WORLD” — On August 6 from 9:00-10:00\, Dr. Laura Hammond of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London will present and lead a discussion on the above. Displacement has happened as a result of natural causes such as drought and demographic shifts\, but also because of human created causes\, such as civil wars\, deforestation\, famine\, governmental neglect and oppression\, racism\, religious fundamentalism\, intolerance and ethnic cleansing\, genocidal policies and even climate change. Millions of people throughout the world\, from Latin America\, the Middle East\, Africa and Asia are uprooted and homeless; yet risking their very lives\, they search our world for a home. Laura will speak of all this\, but also of humane societies and countries where hope persists\, of efforts within our international community to provide new homes at last\, and of the young and old who do create new lives for themselves\, against all odds. Her experience is rooted in the Horn of Africa – particularly Ethiopia and Somalia – where she has worked for the past 25 years.
