DESCRIPTION:RIVER PILGRIMAGE COMES TO BRATTLEBORO: SUNDAY\, JUNE 25: \nJOIN US FOR A DAY OF CELEBRATING OUR CONNECTICUT RIVER \nFrom May 31-July 9\, River Pilgrims of all faiths will be paddling portions of the Connecticut River from its headwaters to its mouth in Long Island Sound. \nRejoice in and give thanks for the miracle of all life that is made possible by the grace of God through water. This spiritual journey of renewal\, restoration\, and reconciliation\, is shaped by the Christian tradition around a series of activities along the Connecticut River\, from the Source to the Sea. \nWater is central to life\, and living\, flowing rivers have played an integral role in ecological\, social\, economic and spiritual practice worldwide since time immemorial. The Connecticut River is a prime example of a river carrying the lifeblood of a region. We’ll be joined by members of the Pilgrimage on Sunday June 25\, in worship\, food\, paddling and contemplative practice. \nThe first part of the morning will take place at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, 16 Bradley Avenue. \n9 AM: Adult Education Forum: “Honoring the Living Waters of our Earth and Our Lives” with reflections on “Water Justice” and “Watershed Discipleship” led by Cary Gaunt and Fred Taylor \n10:15 AM: Sunday Service of Worship: Theme of Sacred Water\, with Guest Preacher\, Rev. Stephen Blackmer\, founder of “Church of the Woods” and Initiator of the River of Life Pilgrimage \n12:00 AM: St. Michael’s “Strawberry Spectacular” fund-raiser for Pure Water for the World – with Strawberry Shortcake\, sandwiches-fixings and perhaps a few river songs! \n1-3 PM: Opportunity for paddling on the Connecticut River; meditative walking; and reflective sharing. Canoes and Kayaks will be available from the nearby canoe rental service for a reasonable charge: bring your canoe or kayak if you have one\, or just come and bring your love of water. DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL SUMMER FORUM\, SUNDAY AUGUST 6: “REFUGEE DISLOCATION\, FLIGHT AND MIGRATION IN AN INCREASINGLY UNWELCOMING WORLD” — On August 6 from 9:00-10:00\, Dr. Laura Hammond of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London will present and lead a discussion on the above. Displacement has happened as a result of natural causes such as drought and demographic shifts\, but also because of human created causes\, such as civil wars\, deforestation\, famine\, governmental neglect and oppression\, racism\, religious fundamentalism\, intolerance and ethnic cleansing\, genocidal policies and even climate change. Millions of people throughout the world\, from Latin America\, the Middle East\, Africa and Asia are uprooted and homeless; yet risking their very lives\, they search our world for a home. Laura will speak of all this\, but also of humane societies and countries where hope persists\, of efforts within our international community to provide new homes at last\, and of the young and old who do create new lives for themselves\, against all odds. Her experience is rooted in the Horn of Africa – particularly Ethiopia and Somalia – where she has worked for the past 25 years.

Kate and Dana McGinn have generously agreed to host the picnic at their place\, which is right next to the lake\, with a great porch for sitting\, wonderful grounds for playing and great access to the lake for swimming\, kayaking\, etc. There will be games\, swimming and a chance to sit and visit with those (both old and new) from our St. Michael’s Community. Drinks\, hot dogs\, hamburgers and veggie burgers will be provided by the church. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. And don’t forget your bathing suits!

The 9/30 and 10/2 meetings will be a time of prayer\, a time of sharing\, and a time of learning. Anyone should attend who’s interested in being part of a small group. It is NOT necessary to attend the introductions on both days; we wanted to offer a weekday and a weekend option so as many people as possible could explore being part of a group.

DESCRIPTION:I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints\, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. – Paul’s letter to the Ephesians \nOn November 5\, St. Michael’s will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’ at both the 8 am and the 10:15 am service.  During this service\, we will remember those saints who have gone before us and loved ones who have died\, as well as recognize ourselves as those ‘saints’ who have been called to follow Jesus with our whole selves.   On this day\, we will remember in our prayers those who have died during the last year. \n\nIf you have people you would like to be named in the prayers\, please add them to the book in the back of the church.\nIf you have pictures of loved ones who have died whose lives you want to give thanks for\, we will provide two tables in the chancel area (in front of the altar and in the corner) as a visible reminder of the saints who have come before us for worship that day.\nBecause this is a major feast day\, we will have incense at the 10:15 am service.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:“LISTENING FOR GOD THROUGH THE HEART\, SOUL\, AND SPIRIT\,” ADVENT WORKSHOP ON DISCERNMENT AND DECISION-MAKING\, SATURDAY DECEMBER 2: What would it be like to experience God’s guidance and support in everyday decisions as well as with major life choices? How do we discern God’s voice in our lives from other competing voices? Come learn a practical framework and method for accessing your deepest wisdom about what it means to follow God by listening for guidance in your decisions. Bring a decision you are currently wrestling with for reflection. The workshop will be co-led by Duncan Hilton and Sarah Moore\, a graduate of Harvard Law School and Divinity School and founder of Decision-making from the Soul (http://www.dmsoul.com). The workshop will be at St Michael’s on Saturday\, December 2 from 8:45 am – noon. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for 4:00 p.m.\, December 11\, and bask in the beauty of the cherished Service of Lessons and Carols! In our green-filled church\, we read and hear the story of Christ’s coming among us\, inter- spersed with carols\, hymns\, and choir anthems sung by our extraordinary choir. Although this service now seems like an ancient Anglican tradition\, in fact it was \n\n\n“formalized” for a service on Christmas Eve in 1880 by the Bishop of Truro (England). It has been in continual use throughout the world ever since\, and we here at St. Michael’s rejoice to celebrate the Nativity of Jesus together in this most anticipated magical service.

Join us at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday\, December 17\, in this inclusive service\, during which we honor the burdens we bear and claim the promise of light that follows even the darkest night. DESCRIPTION:Compline Service December 5\, 12 and 19  \nAll are invited to come to a sung Compline Service (or O ce) at 7:30 pm in the Chapel on the three Tuesdays during Advent: December 5\, 12\, and 19. Compline is also known as “Night Prayer” and we will sing the prayers by candlelight. One of the Ministry of Discipleship disci- plines is o ering ourselves\, and receiving God’s love and blessings\, with our community in worship. In this sea- son of darkness\, we look forward to gathering together by candlelight to o er and receive those blessings.  \nCompline emerged in the life of the church in the fourth century as bedtime prayers for monks in their dormito- ries. In the late middle ages\, Compline was said daily in churches. Following similar moves by other provinces of the Anglican Communion in the early twentieth century\, Compline was restored to the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church in 1979. It is a service lled with tranquility and peace. We o er this worship opportunity during Advent so that we may deepen our connection to God and renew our hearts in preparation for the return of the light and the birth of Jesus.

DESCRIPTION:ST. MICHAEL’S CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING\, SUNDAY JANUARY 14: \nOn Sunday January 14\, St. Michael’s celebrates Martin Luther King. Charles Mays\, Jr will lead the Adult Forum at 9:00 am and he will preach at the 15:15 service. Charles will speak about King’s dream today through the lens of an African-American musician who has sung at Marlboro Festival and with Susan Dedell’s Concert Choir and who has won the Metropolitan Opera Young Artist Award. The Social Justice Ministry asked Charles several questions: \n\n  “What does a black man have to say to a predominantly white congregation on MLK Sunday?”\n  “What can white allies offer African Americans?”\n  “Do you see signs of hope?”\nWhen he accepted the invitation to spend the morning with us\, Mr. Mays wrote: “I will hope I can offer something to challenge and inspire the congregation to introspection resulting in outward action.” At the 8:00 am service on Martin Luther King Sunday\, January 14\, David Carr\, a member of the Social Justice Ministry and a retired Methodist pastor will be the preacher.

DESCRIPTION:“INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER: CENTERING PRAYER AND WELCOMING PRAYER;” FRIDAY JAN 19\, 5:30 – 8:30 PM AND SATURDAY JAN 20\, 8:30 AM – 12 NOON: These methods of Christian prayer and meditation are contemporary forms that have been developed from ancient Christian traditions by Benedictine monk Fr. Thomas Keating in order to “experience God’s presence within us\, closer than breathing\, close than thinking\, closer than consciousness itself.” Fr. Bill Sheehan OMI\, an experienced and beloved retreat director\, will lead this retreat at St. Michael’s. He has been involved with Contemplative Outreach since 1983 and continues to serve the Centering Prayer community. Fr. Sheehan also served as a priest at St. Michael Catholic Church in Brattleboro in the late 1970s. Good-will donations are welcome; simple supper and light breakfast will be provided.
