SUMMARY:Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Palm Sunday\, March 25\, 8 & 10:15am.  This special liturgy begins with a procession (led by a real donkey and some spirited music) of the congregation and the blessing of the palms\, commemorating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel reading is the complete story of the Passion.  The service underlines the contrast between the crowd’s joyous greeting of their king and then their condemnation of him—the contrast between shouts of “Alleluia” and “Crucify him!”

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday\, March 29\, 5:30 pm – \nDinner & Holy Eucharist with Washing of the Feet in the Undercroft\, \nfollowed by the Stripping of the Altar in the sanctuary \nThe word Maundy is derived from the Latin word\, madatum (commandment)\, and refers to Jesus giving the “new commandment” to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34) to his disciples at the Last Supper.   The Maundy Thursday service commemorates the Last supper and often focuses on two things Jesus did at the Last Supper: washing of the disciples’ feed and the institution of the sacrament of Holy Communion.  The service ends in complete silence with the stripping of the altar\, in recognition of Jesus prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and the despair and death to come. \n

SUMMARY:Theology Study Group
DESCRIPTION:THEOLOGY STUDY GROUP MEETS AGAIN APRIL 7\, 9:30 – 11 AM: If you are someone who is excited about theology and are looking for a group who shares that excitement\, you are invited to join a monthly theology study group! We will be meetingat St. Michael’s at 9:30 – 11am on the first Saturday of the month. At these meetings\, one or two members of the group will take turns presenting for 10-15 minutes on a work of Christian theology of their choice. Each presenter will then facilitate a 20- minute discussion on their chosen theology. Karen Guthrie will be presenting April 7th. \nWe hope that this format will allow us to engage more deeply and more broadly with our subject matter than a traditional book study and will also challenge the presenters to provide a concise and compelling account of what they have been studying. Members of the study group may choose to be presenters\, and anyone is welcome to come to listen and discuss. If you have been looking for a place to dig into theology\, you are not alone! We are envisioning an environment in which anyone with an interest in theology will be welcome. You do not need to be an expert in order to attend\, in fact\, none of us are experts! We do\, however\, share a deep desire to grapple with the difficult questions about God and creation\, life and death\, good and evil\, crucifixion and resurrection\, and to do so within a curious and supportive group. We look forward toseeing you Saturday\, April 7th at 9:30 am in the St. Michael’s meeting room!

SUMMARY:Open Discipleship Group
DESCRIPTION:CURIOUS ABOUT GOING DEEPER WITH CHRISTIAN PRACTICE AND COMMUNITY? Visit the Wednesday evening discipleship group. It is open to anyone interested in Christian prayer\, fellowship\, and spiritual practice. It meets on the1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month from 5:30-7:15. The next meeting is April 18. Childcare is provided. There is a potluck supper from 5:30-6:00. At 6:00 the liturgy begins with gathering in a circle for a time of “lectio divina”\, or sacredreading\, when as a group we read\, reflect\, meditate\, and pray together with a brief scripture passage. The liturgy continues with optional sharing about what is on their heart and how they are noticing God at work in their lives. The gathering ends with a time for people to reflect on any spiritual disciplines they are practicing (e.g. prayer\, stewardship of money\, discernment\, working with the poor and marginalized) and how they may feel called to deepen with that practice. Contact the Rev. Duncan Hilton (duncan@stmicahelsvermont.org) if you’d like to learn more.

SUMMARY:Approaching the Scriptures for Preaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:APRIL 28 WORKSHOP: “APPROACHING THE SCRIPTURES FOR PREACHING AND LEARNING” \n\n\n\n\nThe Sabbatical Committee will offer a workshop open to all on approaching the scriptures for preaching and learning. The April 28 workshop will run from 9 am to 12 noon in the Meeting Room. The leader will be Rev. Allen ‘Mick’ Comstock\, longtime UCC pastor in Heath and Charlemont in western Massachusetts. Mick has devoted his ministry to being and teaching in the community where life is lived and bringing the Word\, worship and prayer to bear on daily living. In this workshop which is open to everyone\, he will lead us in approaching the scripture expecting to be surprised. \nMick writes\, “One of the greatest temptations in approaching scripture\, especially for the purpose of preaching\, is to come looking for reinforcement of what you already think. e second greatest temptation\, especially if you’ve been at this for a long time\, is to come thinking you already know what it’s going to say. Preaching from the lectionary is a discipline that tries to help us overcome both of these temptations\, but it can’t do so by itself. It’s up to us to approach the scripture passages desiring and expecting to be freshly addressed by God in them. is workshop will give us the opportunity to discover and cultivate this practice together.”

SUMMARY:A Mighty Outcry
DESCRIPTION:A Mighty Outcry is the fourth of a set of mystery plays written for young people with words and music by Paul Dedell. It will premier on Saturday\, April 28 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday\, April 29 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church\, Brattleboro. \nA Mighty Outcry explores the complex young woman known popularly as “Joan of Arc.”  Although Joan is now an icon of French identity\, A Mighty Outcry seeks to discover the young woman who not only led armies\, but who wept for those who perished on both sides. \nJoan was 13 when she began hearing voices urging her to rescue the people of France from the English army\, who were waging a “scorched earth” campaign at that time in France.  She managed to persuade the Dauphin of France to allow her to lead troops to the besieged city of Orleans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence when the siege was lifted after only nine days. Several additional swift victories paved the way for the final French victory. At the age of 18\, she was captured by a pro-English faction and put on trial. She was burned at the stake one year later. \nComposer Paul Dedell wanted to avoid the narrow stereotypes that exist about Joan\, and he also wanted to examine some of the topics that remain surprisingly resonant today\, particularly gender identity\, and the persuasive force of religious fanaticism. But he says\, “the central question of the play is how does one discern the rightness of the inner voices that guide our decisions? This is a question which is particularly critical during the teen years of life\, and one that is central to the inner story of Joan herself.” \nSusan Dedell is music director of the production\, which features the talented senior members of The Choir School\, a program which she founded to train young singers\, and which is now in it’s 4th year. She remarks\, “These wonderful young people have a way of bringing the core message of these shows right to the front burner. Their freshness is matched only by their insight.” \nAdmission is $12 adults/$5 student. For more information\, call the church office at 254-6048 or email wingedproductions.vt@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Theology Study Group
DESCRIPTION:THEOLOGY STUDY GROUP MEETS AGAIN May 5\, 9:30 – 11 AM: If you are someone who is excited about theology and are looking for a group who shares that excitement\, you are invited to join a monthly theology study group!
