All are invited to St. Michael’s Advent Lessons and Carols service on Sunday Dec. 7 at 4pm. In addition to the singing of Advent carols with the congregation, the St. Michael’s choir will be singing a diverse set of old and new Advent anthems by Rutter, Sirett, Jakobs, Gorecki (in Polish!), and premiering a brand-new Advent anthem composed by music director Keane Southard with words by the Reverend adwoa Wilson. Come join in this yearly tradition of scripture and music as we look forward to celebrating the birth of Christ.
At the service, there will be an offering for the Beloved Winter Shelter. If you wish to make an offering, please bring cash or checks made out to “Skyberry Collaborative” with “Beloved Shelter” in the memo line.
More about the Service
The Lessons and Carols are built around the Great O Antiphons of Advent, ancient chants that originated in the 5th or 6th century. Each chant describes a characteristic or name of God and a vision of the time when spiritual darkness turns to light. As we light the candles, may we each hold in our heart all who seek the healing light of justice, healing, mercy, and joy.
The Antiphons are remarkable in many ways, not the least being that they bring a wide representation of imagery and imagination to describe the Divine: Wisdom; Source of Order; Fire; Morning Star; Cornerstone; Root; Key; and finally: God that dwells within us. As you hear them, you may want to use this imagery to help you experience that particular aspect of the sacred in your life or in the world around you.
