Compline

Compline Service December 5, 12 and 19

All are invited to come to a sung Compline Service (or O ce) at 7:30 pm in the Chapel on the three Tuesdays during Advent: December 5, 12, and 19. Compline is also known as “Night Prayer” and we will sing the prayers by candlelight. One of the Ministry of Discipleship disci- plines is o ering ourselves, and receiving God’s love and blessings, with our community in worship. In this sea- son of darkness, we look forward to gathering together by candlelight to o er and receive those blessings.

Compline emerged in the life of the church in the fourth century as bedtime prayers for monks in their dormito- ries. In the late middle ages, Compline was said daily in churches. Following similar moves by other provinces of the Anglican Communion in the early twentieth century, Compline was restored to the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church in 1979. It is a service lled with tranquility and peace. We o er this worship opportunity during Advent so that we may deepen our connection to God and renew our hearts in preparation for the return of the light and the birth of Jesus.
